coroner (Eng) : Public official, of English origin, charged with duty to make inquiry into the causes and circumstances of any death which occurs through violence or suddenly and with marks of suspicion; ie unnatural death. In the United States the functions and duties of coroners have been diminished having been replaced by ‘medial examiners’. In Iran, any doctor at the regular employ of the Forensic Medicine Department with the responsibilities and duties of a coroner who deals not only with cases of deaths but also reported injuries); medial examiner; medico-legal examiner.
